This is a six-week course that will aim to demystify knitting with 4 double point needles, also known as dpns. Feel free to bring your own yarn and needles.

No experience of knitting in the round, with 4-dpns is needed. We will have people of differing experiences and expectations who can work together so we all learn how to knit socks. This sock will be a ‘practice piece’ for you to learn on.

Week 1 - You will be shown how to cast on your sock and use the 4 needles to knit ‘in the round’ the cuff. Then, every stitch is knit to knit the leg for length required

Week 2 - Divide for heel stitches, make heel flap

Week 3 - How to ‘turn the heel’ which makes it 3-dimensional to fit around the heel

Week 4 - Work the ‘gusset’ which further shapes the heel and begin to knit the foot

Week 5 - Continue to knit along the foot and begin toe shaping

Week 6 - Work the toe shaping and learning the ‘Kitchener Stitch’ to close it seamlessly

Tools & Materials

Yarn: We can provide sock or 4-ply yarn for you or, if you already have some you can bring your own. The yarn works best with some wool content, but you can choose other yarns if you prefer, or if there’s an issue with wool.

Needles: socks require a closer fabric to be knitted, thus 4x 2.25, 2.50 or 2.75 dpns will be needed. Or, if you prefer to use a double-knit yarn then 3.25 or 3.50 can be used.

Nest is an inclusive organisation and everyone is welcome. If you have any additional needs or require additional support please contact us in advance of your booking so we can make sure we are able to provide it.

Having lived in Scotland since 2002 I am a retired children and families’ social worker of nearly 30 years, latterly working alongside foster carers. I was a committee member of the Dundee Embroiders’ Guild, and I’ve been a member of the Quilters Guild of Great Britain and Ireland for several years. I studied embroidery and Textiles at Dundee College and with Gillian Cooper in Stirling. I do various crafts including crochet, dressmaking, quilting, embroidery and, of course, knitting. First learning as a child from my mum and nan, I returned to knitting when I had my children and, some nearly 50 years later, I knit every day. I’ve taught knitting and sock knitting to various friends, and at Cally Crafters in the Glen, as well as my sister in England over the phone. During the lockdown I also helped to teach some of my colleagues to knit on a video call. At the end of 2023, I taught a successful sock knitting class at Nest and am really happy to be returning to look at pattern, cable and colour knitting there.
