October 2021

After the amazing response to our granny square plea we now need help to turn them into blankets by sewing or crocheting them together. We also need a crochet border around the edge of each blanket.

If you can help with any of these tasks please get involved so we can complete them in time for gifting to those in need at Christmas

You can come to our weekly drop-in at Nest Creative Spaces, Blairgowrie every Wednesday in October & November between 10 & 2  or collect a bag of squares to work on at home or to share with your community group.

Well the project has been a roaring success, so much so that there are hundreds of squares that now need to be made into blankets. There will be a range of events held within the community to join the squares to make blankets. Nest will be hosting a weekly "sew the squares" event every Wednesday between 10 and 2 during October and November. Just pop in to take part, there may be cake!

May 2021

An exciting new project has been launched that all community members are being invited to take part in. It is called #sharethesquarestrathmore and is supported by various local East Perthshire community groups. Individuals are being encouraged to crochet granny squares which will be collected and then sewn together into blankets which will be donated to an individual, or family, that could do with a bit of community love.

One of the project organisers, Jinty Smart, who works for PKC explained,

“This last year has been so difficult for so many people. We are all stuck in our homes, many of us are  feeling isolated and alone. I know restrictions are easing but a lot of us will still feel uneasy about going out. #sharethesquarestrathmore is a project that will appeal to both those who want to get out and about and to those who will feel happier staying at home. It is a project that can bring people together in the shape of a completed blanket and what nicer present to a person in need than a big warm, welcome hug from the community, especially in times like this.
Crochet has become increasingly popular over the last year as a fun, absorbing and therapeutic hobby. Celebrities such as the Olympic diver Tom Daley are great enthusiasts regularly posting pictures of their new creations. We are looking for 6” granny squares in double knit wool, and apart from that the sky’s the limit, any pattern, colour etc will do. We know many people will have stacks of wool and crochet hooks in their cupboards but for those that don’t, or are new to crochet, starter kits with clear instructions will be available from Nest Creative Spaces. If you can’t get in to Blairgowrie get in touch with me and I can get a set delivered to you. I know there are a lot of budding crocheters out there, this is an ideal opportunity to give crochet a try and be part of a caring, community project. “

Squares can be donated up to the end of September.
